How to recognize different types of allergies?

Allergies have become a pretty common ailment in today’s world as over 50 million people have some type of allergies. According to medical experts, it is the 6th most common cause of chronic illness among human beings across the world. Usually, allergies occur when the immune system of an individual reacts to some foreign substance in the environment that is harmless to most of the people. These substances which lead to allergy are known as allergens.

When a person who is allergic to a particular allergen comes into contact with it, an allergic reaction occurs. The process generally starts when the allergens enter the body and trigger an antibody response. The antibodies attach themselves to special cells called mast cells. When the allergen comes in contact with the antibodies, the mast cells respond by releasing certain substance and one of them is called histamine. If the histamine is released due to an allergen, it might result in swelling and inflammation leading to irritation.

Allergies are classified according to the substances causing them or the part of the body they affect. The cause of allergy can differ from person to person, but here are some of the common categories of allergy and their symptoms

  1. Food allergies

Food allergy is one of the most common types of allergy. Sufferer tends to be allergic to a wide range of food but the intolerances can be quite specific. Eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy and certain seeds like mustard and sesame are some of the common food allergy triggers and are said to be major allergen across the globe.

Symptoms of food allergy might include:

  • Vomiting and/or stomach cramps
  • Hives
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Repetitive cough
  • Shock or circulatory collapse
  • Tight, hoarse throat; trouble swallowing
  • Swelling of the tongue, affecting the ability to talk or breathe
  • Weak pulse
  • Pale or blue coloring of skin
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  1. Skin allergies

Skin allergies often lead to red, bumpy, itchy skin and are generally painful, irritating as well as embarrassing. There could be plenty of reasons which might trigger skin allergy like exposure to certain plants or due to certain medication or food. Eczema and hives are said to be most common skin allergies which include skin rashes. Some common system which might states skin allergies are

  • Redness and rashes
  • Blisters
  • Burning and itching feeling
  • Inflammation
  • Slight pain in the infected area
  1. Dust allergy

Dust allergies are immediately caused after vacuuming, sweeping and dusting. Since the cleaning process stirs up the dust particles, it makes easier to inhale them, and the medical condition of people with dust allergies often worsen. Dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pollen and pet hair, fur or feathers are some of the triggers to dust allergy. The major symptoms which states dust allergy are

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Red, itchy or teary eyes
  • Wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath
  • Itching in body

Other common allergies are caused due to pet, drugs, molds, insects and more. The triggers to allergies are generally diagnosed by the experts after performing some series of tests. Proper medication and making distance from the allergen help deal with allergies.
